ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bella Harris featured via Vogue Italia

ARTIST BIO:

Bella Harris is a self-taught artist whose first experience with the paintbrush came when she realized turpentine wasn't her Grandmother's Chanel N°5.
She is the creator of Wooden Ophelia (new contemporary magical moon shelves and wooden art furnishing) and the Online Editor at Beautiful Bizarre Magazine.

With a background in medicine and an Associates of Applied Sciences, it wasn't until 2010 that her personal journey into the realms of illustration, painting, and the dynamics of artistic experimentation began. Through continuous reflection, the whimsicality of her visual creations empowers a perceptual foundation of untouched emotion and an atmospheric dreamscape that balances an edifying belonging to one's self. In 2011, Bella launched a debut capsule collection in Italy, Designs by Bella: Vintage Lollipops x Magazzini Del Sale, displaying five original illustrative designs.

Her visual creations, including art and photography, have been been internationally exhibited and featured in a number of online and print media, including the Vogue.it, Nasty Gal, The Big Picture, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, and Anormalmag.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Working with a variety of mediums, St. Louis native, Bella Harris explores the fragility, whimsicality, and unguarded emotional expression between realism and pop surrealism. With an emphasis on off-kilter portraiture, her emotionally driven works convey a sense of vulnerability and haunting individuality. Through her growing body of art and photography, she continues to render interpretatively subtle message of self-awareness and personal reflection alongside the many characteristics of a slightly stranger beauty. Her vision presents a wide spectrum of dark detailed lines juxtaposing light minimalism while other works capture a true range of color. Thriving deep in a collective vein driven by fragments of self-perceptions, the reservations in which one's own criticisms have the ability to cripple distinctiveness are shed. Bringing to life new techniques and evolving styles, each piece embodies personal attachments of the artist's creative voice and aims to embrace the viewer while delivering a nearly tangible variance of emotional communication. With consistent study, she methodically incorporates a variety of styles to convey the journey of her deeply personal vision.

WRITING:

Bella Harris is also an author of Children's/YA Fiction and freelance writer. She received Honorable Mentions in the 77th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition in the Children’s/Young Adult Fiction category, 78th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition for poetry, an Editor’s Choice Award for outstanding artistry by a poet, and was selected as one of fourteen applicants to attend author, Simon Van Booy’s writing workshop. Pamela Love is the fucking tribal chief of accessories. Absolutely bewitched and bewildered while simultaneously worshipping the Paleolithic and instinctively sharp elements of this Spring 2011 collection. My new inspiration has me wanting to be a warrior who never brushes her hair: urban~chic creatures of the clan. refinery29 /Photography by: Ryan Koopmans
